Hughes Blues Part Four

It’s been a weird couple of weeks. And on today, the day that I have finally resolved to be the day that I get back to work on my novel for real, I’d rather not leave you with some short, half-assed update. Instead, in the spirit of looking back to reacquaint myself with Hai, I decided to look back a little further for some inspiration. This is one of my favorites from Langston Hughes for lots of reasons, most importantly because of how fraught with a simple significance it is. Hope you like it as much as I do.

Genius Child

This is a song for the genius child.
Sing it softly, for the song is wild.
Sing it softly as ever you can —
Lest the song get out of hand.

Nobody loves a genius child.

Can you love an eagle,
Tame or wild?

Wild or tame,
Can you love a monster
Of frightening name?

Nobody loves a genius child.

Kill him — and let his soul run wild!
