I’m not sure if it’s because I’m still recovering from last night’s Game of Thrones, but I may be having an existential crisis over things happening behind the scenes. In regards to the episode and my own writing. But don’t be alarmed, no spoilers here.
So last night we learned that there were some crucial bits of information, particularly conversation, that occurred off screen over the past few episodes. I don’t want to be silly and pretend like it wasn’t intended to give us a surprise, because it most certainly was. But the way that they structured the past few episodes really had me going. It was so well done that I want to emulate it somehow, and I had planned to do so in my novel anyway.
But what really got me was that we were given pretty much every possible viewpoint except the most crucial one. I guess the reason I’m still reeling a bit is because it came from two characters who, from episode one, have laid all their cards on the table every single time. No secrets. In that sense, I suppose you could say that they’ve learned how to play the Game of Thrones. Which is a big deal.
Anyway, I’m not going to dissect the episode. I don’t know, I guess I just get excited when I see storytelling done so well and it makes me a little jealous. I want to be that good, and I’m not afraid to appropriate writing techniques for my own use. Being a big fan of unreliable narrators and withholding information in general, of course I’m somewhat in awe. Mostly because I really enjoy learning new techniques and approaches. It almost makes me want to buy the books to see how George R. R. Martin succeeds in doing it in prose. But I honestly like to write as if my readers were watching a movie or a tv show, which is where I get most of my inspiration to be honest.
Don’t know where I’m going with this or whether I’ve made a point. Maybe it’s just that inspiration can come from anywhere? Not that I’m particularly surprised that Game of Thrones inspired me or anyone for that matter.
TL;DR Game of Thrones did something cool and I wanna emulate it OR When you play the Game of Thrones… You get inspired! Good one, right?
